All important info for the on-site visit
Katzenstein Castle is a historic Staufer castle from the 12th century and with its Romanesque castle chapel from the 13th century probably one of the oldest castles in southern Germany. We would like to invite you to a journey through time at Katzenstein Castle.
Castle Katzenstein towers impressively on a high rock with its ring wall, palace and keep rise mightily on a rock. The keep in particular seems to have grown into the rock with its enormous humpbacked ashlars.
The tower contains an open stone chimney from Romanesque times, in whose mantle a cat and a lily are carved as heraldic symbols.
Characterised by Romanesque style, the castle complex is also a prime example of a fortified complex with several inner courtyards, battlements and bastions.
The 12th century palace and the mighty barrel vault on the lowest floor, which spans the 23 m deep castle well hewn into the rock, as well as the Romanesque castle chapel dedicated to St. Lawrence, are contemporary witnesses to this unique Staufen castle complex.
According to legend, twelve chests filled with gold and precious stones are buried on Katzenstein, but the castle ghost Valerian guards them so well that the treasure will probably remain hidden for eternity.
