The Museum

Experience Jan van Eyck in Bruges!
Have you visited the Historium yet? It’s the most visited tourist attraction on the Market Square (Markt) in Bruges. In the Historium, you step back in time to medieval Bruges with Jan van Eyck. You can see how lively Bruges was during the Golden Age in various ways, with new and pioneering technologies. It's an unmissable day out for the entire family!

Historium Story
In the Historium Story you follow the story of Jan van Eyck’s apprentice (based on the painting 'Virgin and Child with Canon van der Paele'). You walk through the marvellous attraction with an audio guide. Seven themed rooms with decors, film and special effects bring the most important places in medieval Bruges to life.

Historium Virtual Reality
Go back to the year 1435 in the Historium Virtual Reality and sail virtually into the port of Bruges! This was made possible by creating a replica of Bruges from that period. You will see how the Waterhalle and Belfry were in the past and can fly from the Market Square to the former St. Donatian’s Cathedral. It is truly an exhilarating experience that you feel right to the tips of your toes!

Historium Exhibition
In this interactive exhibition you will find additional information about Bruges as a flourishing trading town during the Golden Age (15th century). In this period, the port was still located in the centre of Bruges and the 'Waterhalle', the central warehouse for sea traders, stood on the site that is now the Historium. You also learn about the customs of medieval Bruges and the painter Jan van Eyck. Also enjoy the splendid panoramic view of the Market Square and the Belfry.

Historium Tower
For a unique 360° view of the Market Square (Markt) in Bruges and the Belfry as they are today, you can climb the Historium Tower. The beautiful neogothic stair turret with a height of 30 metres offers the best place for a selfie with the Belfry!

Tip for 2021
In 2021, the year of Jan van Eyck will be extended and we will put this Flemish Primitive in the spotlight. Discover thé exciting excursion for young and old!

Family Trail
Are you visiting the Historium with your family? If so, you will have a great time on the Family Trail – a trail with wacky hunts and activities, multisensory boxes for smelling and touching, as well as a digital quiz. A cute owl will guide you in solving several Historium mysteries.

Duvelorium Grand Beer Café
To round off your visit, you can relax a little in the Duvelorium Grand Beer Café, a Duvel-themed café. Here you can sample some of the best Belgian beers in an authentic setting with a beautiful terrace overlooking the Market Square.

The Historium is open every day, including Sundays and public holidays. Audio guides and Virtual Reality are available in 10 languages. Discover everything we have to offer at www.historium.be.
