House of Literature Uwe Johnson

The "Uwe Johnson" House of Literature is located in a former warehouse built around 1890 near Klützer Marktplatz. The listed building houses a permanent exhibition about the writer Uwe Johnson, the town information office and the town library. As a forum for cultural activities, the house presents the fascinating world of literature in a variety of ways. Readings, discussions, films, exhibitions and workshops make it a meeting place for visitors interested in culture and literature.

The "Uwe Johnson" House of Literature is one of the few poets' houses in Germany that was not the writer's former place of birth or residence. Even though the house is not a classic poet's house, references to Johnson's texts suggested a literary and touristic use of the warehouse.

The exhibition provides a multi-faceted insight into the life and work of Uwe Johnson on two levels. In a special way it presents the writer, who always remained closely connected to Mecklenburg, and his works in a region which, with its towns, fields, forests and waters, was one of the most important literary landscapes. This is achieved by means of multimedia presentations as well as text excerpts from his works and pictures showing the typical landscape drawings of Mecklenburg. In addition, contemporary witnesses such as Max Frisch, Günter Grass, Walter Kempowski and Siegfried Unseld have their say.
