Everything flows. 100 years of Erwin Rehmann - 20 years of the Rehmann Museum
The Rehmann Museum presents the retrospective on the occasion of the 100th birthday of Erwin Rehmann (1921-2020). The celebration of his artistic work is also the 20th anniversary of the Rehmann Museum, which has housed the sculptor's largest body of work since 2001.
Since the early 1940s, Erwin Rehmann has been constantly searching for material and philosophical answers in the sculptural process. Erwin Rehmann explores the possibilities of sculpture in an unprecedented and unmatched spectrum: from the raw expression of the human form, to the abstraction of it, and all the way to the essence of matter itself. He declares the act of casting to be art, the expression of a language slumbering in metal. Erwin Rehmann's work takes on manifold forms over the course of many decades, all of which are the result of a single, alert and curious artist. With this in mind, this retrospective is conceived not as a chronological listing, but as an interconnected look through his oeuvre. Early, middle and late works come together under common themes in order to illuminate one aspect in particular: The process of change in forms brought about by a hundred years of life. The thematic fields of the exhibition, each with its own title, such as "Cosmos", "Fruit", "Face", "Process", "Fragments", "Encyclopedia" and "Constructions", sum up common aspects of works whose years of creation lie decades apart. Except for this, the latest group of works presents itself as a unity and is thus publicly appreciated for the first time in the exhibition "Everything flows".
