Gräfenhainichen, Tagebau Golpa-Nord: Jahrzehntelang ein Ort entfesselter Industriekräfte und Umweltsünden, aber auch sicherer Arbeitsplätze und großartiger Leistungen der Arbeiter und Ingenieure im Bergbau. Doch dann hatte Braunkohle kaum mehr Zukunft in Sachsen-Anhalt. Was tun? Abreißen, verschrotten, die Spuren verwischen? Oder auf der Vergangenheit aufbauen und den Neuanfang wagen? 1957 begannen die Vorarbeiten für den Tagebau Golpa-Nord. Sieben Jahre später setzte die planmäßige Braunkohleförderung ein. Die hatte in Mitteldeutschland eine lange Tradition, ihre Wurzeln reichen bis ins 17. Jahrhundert zurück. In den 1950er Jahren verschmolzen die zunächst verstreuten Reviere zu einem Ganzen. Der Abbau erreichte gewaltige Ausmaße. Ergebnis: 20 Tagebaue mit einem jährlichen Auswurf von zuletzt rund 100 Millionen Tonnen Kohle, gefördert von fast 60.000 Bergleuten und verwertet von zahlreichen Kraftwerken, Brikettfabriken und Schwelereien. Noch ein Ergebnis: tiefe Löcher in der Erde. Unter diesen gehörte Golpa-Nord eher zu den kleinen. Der Förderaufwand war dennoch enorm: Für einen Eimer Braunkohle mussten sechs Eimer Wasser abgepumpt und 5 Eimer Abraum verkippt werden. 1991 war Schluss – nahezu die gesamte mitteldeutsche Braunkohleindustrie stand damals vor dem Aus. In Golpa-Nord nahm fortan eine Vision Gestalt an: FERROPOLIS. Die Idee dazu kam aus dem Bauhaus Dessau, ihre Umsetzung verdankt sich zu einem beträchtlichen Teil der Begeisterung und Hartnäckigkeit der Menschen vor Ort. Heute ist FERROPOLIS Museum, Industriedenkmal, Stahlskulptur, Veranstaltungsareal und Themenpark gleichermaßen. Alles beherrschend: die riesigen Baggermaschinen, die aussehen wie Dinosaurier eines Vergangenen Zeitalters. Doch die Zukunft hat längst begonnen. Das bezeugen erste Ansiedlungen kleiner Unternehmen ebenso wie zahlreiche neue Projekte: Kulturfestivals, mit Strom versorgt vom Solarkraftwerk Ferrosolar. In FERROPOLIS ist die Geschichte der Zukunft sichtbar. Und die Gegenwart wird gefeiert: Internationale Festivals ebenso wie große Konzerte von Herbert Grönemeyer bis Metallica haben FERROPOLIS einen europaweiten Ruf als einmalige Kulisse für Künstler und Publikum verliehen: Cool Tradition!
