Zum 200. Todestag und erstmals seit 1811 ist mit diesem Band eine umfassende und kommentierte Auswahl des Werks von Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim greifbar. Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim (1719-1803) gehört zu den bedeutenden Autoren der sogenannten Vorklassik. Vor allem mit seinen anakreontischen Gedichten hat er einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Geschichte der deutschen Lyrik geleistet, aber auch durch seine Fabeln und Romanzen, seine Sinngedichte und besonders seine Kriegslieder eines preußischen Grenadiers hat er anregend auf die Literatur seiner Zeit gewirkt. Anlässlich des 200. Todestages am 18. Februar 2003 erscheint diese Auswahlausgabe. Sie bietet einen repräsentativen Überblick über das umfangreiche Gesamtwerk Gleims. Nachwort und Kommentar geben die notwendigen Informationen zu den Texten, stellen wichtige Bezüge her und führen ein in Leben und Werk des Autors. Die Texte werden in der Originalorthographie wiedergegeben. Als Textgrundlage dienen die Erstdrucke bzw. Erstausgaben, in Einzelfällen, wie beim Briefwechsel zwischen Gleim und Gottfried August Bürger, wird auch auf die Handschriften zurückgegriffen. Das vorliegende Werk rückt Gleim, der heute insbesondere als Förderer junger Autoren, Stifter des »Freundschaftstempels« und Briefeschreiber bekannt ist, wieder als Poeten in unser literarisches Bewußtsein. Die 2. unveränderte Auflage erschien anlässlich Gleims 300. Geburtstag im Jahr 2019.
