Bahnbrechende Erfindungen der industriellen Revolution sandten schon im 17. und frühen 18. Jahrhundert ihre ersten Vorboten aus. Die in diesem Band der Reihe „Sachsen-Anhalt und das 18. Jahrhundert“ versammelten Beiträge spüren diese auf und spannen in der Folge einen Bogen, der neben den Bereichen Wirtschaft und Technik auch die der Wissenschaft und Bildung sowie der Kunst und Literatur erfasst.
So liest man von Maschinenmodellen in der Ausbildung der Freiberger Berg- und Hüttenleute, lernt die Familie Bennighauß und die Hüttenschule in Thale kennen, erfährt von den ersten Dampfmaschinen in Altenweddingen und Hettstedt, folgt den Spuren reisender Bergbeamter und sieht, wie sich wirtschaftliche und technische Entwicklungen auch in Malerei und Dichtung der Zeit niederschlagen.
Im Ergebnis entsteht ein gesellschaftliches Porträt der Region am Vorabend der Industrialisierung, die die besondere Rolle offenbart, die der mitteldeutsche Raum in vielfacher Hinsicht bei der Weichenstellung für jene neuzeitlichen Veränderungen spielte.
