The Museum

Das Bornaer Museum wurde 1935 gegründet und erlebte mit seiner Sammlung einige Ortswechsel innerhalb der Stadt. Seit 1974 ist es im Reichstor und den angrenzenden Gebäuden untergebracht. Die Rekonstruktion wurde 1999 abgeschlossen. Seitdem entstanden die Bereiche der ständigen Ausstellung Stück für Stück neu. Die Ausstellungen in den Räumen des Tores werden seiner einstigen Funktion gerecht: Museumsgäste können die Wachstube anschauen und sich über die Gerichtsbarkeit in Borna informieren. Ein Aufstieg im Reichstor lohnt sich allemal, schon wegen der ganz oben gelegenen Türmerstube und dem Blick über die Innenstadt, den man von dort aus genießen kann. Die Ausstellungen in den angrenzenden Gebäuden beschäftigen sich mit den wichtigsten wirtschaftlichen Aspekten der Stadtgeschichte: dem Braunkohlenbergbau und seiner verarbeitenden Industrie, der Musikinstrumentenbau, die Feldgärtnerei und die Geschichte der "Blauen Reiter", dem in Borna stationierten Karabinierregiment. Anhand von Grabungsfunden wird auch ein Exkurs in die Ur- und Frühgeschichte des Bornaer Landes möglich. Die Museumsarbeit basiert auf der seit über einhundert Jahren bestehenden Sammlung, die sich besonders durch umfangreiche Schriftgut- und Fotobestände sowie die vollständige Ausgabe des Bornaer Tageblattes (1841-1945) auszeichnet.
