The Museum

Das Museum Franz Gertsch ist ein mehrheitlich privat finanziertes Museum, das dem Werk von Franz Gertsch gewidmet ist. Auf gut der Hälfte der Ausstellungsfläche zeigt das Museum Wechselausstellungen mit zeitgenössischer Kunst. Im April 1998 kam es zu einem Treffen zwischen dem Burgdorfer Industriellen Willy Michel und dem Künstler Franz Gertsch in dessen Atelier in Rüschegg. Die Werke machten tiefen Eindruck bei Willy Michel, und schon bald nach dieser ersten Begegnung fasste er den Entschluss, in Burgdorf auf dem zentral gelegenen Areal der ehemaligen Milka Käserei AG ein Museum für eine zukünftige Gertsch-Sammlung zu errichten. Aus einem schon zuvor für das Terrin ausgelobten städtebaulichen Wettbewerb war das Schweizer Architekturbüro Jörg & Sturm als Sieger hervorgegangen. Willy Michel beauftragte das Büro mit dem Museumsprojekt, der Baubeginn erfolgte im Sommer 2000; schon im Oktober 2002 konnte das Museum feierlich eröffnet werden. Den Grundstock der Museums-Sammlung bildet die im Herbst 2001 gegründete Stiftung Willy Michel. Willy Michel brachte fünf grossformatige Gemälde und ein Konvolut an Holzschnitten, Franz Gertsch weitere Holzschnitte als Schenkung in die Stiftung ein. SAMMLUNG 1998 fasste der Burgdorfer Industrielle Willy Michel zusammen mit Franz Gertsch den Entschluss, ein gemeinsam getragenes Museum zu bauen und einzurichten. Willy Michel stellte die Finanzierung des gesamten Projektes sicher und gründete die nach ihm benannte Stiftung Willy Michel, die den Grundstock der Sammlung bildet. Die Sammlung bietet in ihrer Vollständigkeit eine Konstellation, wie sie für einen Künstler von Rang wohl einzigartig ist: Sie umfasst Werke von Franz Gertsch aus den Jahren von 1984 bis heute. Im Einzelnen sind dies die Gemälde «Silvia I» und «Gräser I–IV» sowie zahlreiche Holzschnitte, darunter auch mehrere grossformatige Triptychen. Darüber hinaus ergänzt das Museum die eigenen Bestände mit Leihgaben von anderen Museen oder privaten Leihgebern und versucht, weitere Werke für die Sammlung zu erwerben.
