Im August 2018 wiedereröffnet, präsentiert Ihnen das Ostpreußische Landesmuseum mit neuer Deutschbaltischer Abteilung neben seinen wechselnden Sonderausstellungen eine vollkommen neugestaltete Dauerausstellung: Erforschen Sie Bernstein im hauseigenen Labor, spähen Sie vom Hochsitz in die weiten Wälder des ehemaligen Ostpreußens, verfolgen Sie den Weg vom Aufstieg Preußens bis zur Reichsgründung, erfahren Sie mehr über das Schicksal der Vertriebenen nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, entdecken Sie die Hansezeit, betrachten Sie bedeutende Kunst von Lovis Corinth und Käthe Kollwitz und lernen Sie die berühmten Trakehner-Pferde kennen. Ein Höhepunkt ist zudem die Deutschbaltische Abteilung, die erstmals die Geschichte der Deutschbalten museal aufbereitet.

Zur Erinnerung an den vor 250 Jahren im damals russischen Gouvernement Estland geborenen Admiral in russischen Diensten, Adam Johann von Krusenstern (1770-1846), präsentiert das Ostpreußische Landesmuseum mit Deutschbaltischer Abteilung seine neuste Kabinettausstellung.Der aus einer deutschbaltischen Familie stammende von Krusenstern wurde berühmt, da ihm im Auftrag des Kaisers Alexander I. mit den Schiffen Nadeschda und Newa – letzteres unter dem Kommando seines Jugendfreundes Juri Lissjanski – die erste russische Weltumsegelung gelang.Die Ausstellung nimmt Bezug darauf und zeigt seltene Kupferstiche dieser Expedition, deren Vorlagen der Leipziger Arzt, Zeichner und Naturforscher Wilhelm Gottlieb Tilesius von Tilenau (1769-1857) fertigte, der an der Reise teilnahm.Das Reisevorhaben diente der Erkundung von neuen Handelswegen des aufstrebenden russischen Imperiums, das mit den alten europäischen Kolonialmächten im pazifischen Ozean in Konkurrenz trat. Angestrebt waren zudem diplomatische Beziehungen zu Japan, Handelsbeziehungen zu China und die Stärkung der eigenen kolonialen Stützpunkte in Russisch-Alaska.Die Expedition führte von Kronstadt aus über Teneriffa und die brasilianische Insel St. Catharina, Kap Hoorn, die Marquesas-Inseln in der Südsee (Nuku Hiva), Nagasaki, Kamtschatka, die Küsten Japans und Sachalins, die Aleuten- und Kurilen-Inseln über Macao, China und das Kap der Guten Hoffnung im August 1806 zurück nach Europa.Der Ertrag der Weltumsegelung war hinsichtlich der wirtschaftlichen und wissenschaftlichen Ergebnisse immens, auch wenn die diplomatischen Ziele nicht erreicht wurden. Die genaue Aufnahme und Erforschung zuvor wenig bekannter Länder und Meere, neuartige Erkenntnisse vor allem in der Nautik, Ozeanografie, Kartografie, Astronomie und Ethnologie machten die Expedition von Krusenstern zu einem großen Erfolg.
