Anlässlich des Jubiläums 1700 Jahre jüdisches Leben in Deutschland sowie den Feierlichkeiten der Woche der Brüderlichkeit in Stuttgart stellen wir einen bislang zu wenig beachteten »verlorenen Sohn« Stuttgarts in den Fokus.

Fred Uhlman wurde 1901 in Stuttgart geboren und arbeitete hier ab 1927 als Rechtsanwalt. Im März 1933 musste er ins Exil nach Frankreich flüchten. 1936 begegnete er seiner zukünftigen Frau Diana Croft und zog zu ihr nach London. Bereits in Frankreich hatte Uhlman 1934 als Autodidakt mit der Malerei begonnen und setzte dies nun erfolgreich in England fort. Im Juni 1940 wurde er verhaftet und für sechs Monate auf der Isle of Man interniert, wo er Kurt Schwitters begegnete. Dort entstand der Zyklus »Captivity«, gezeichnet in schwarzer Feder und grauem und schwarzem Pinsel. In dieser Serie stellt Uhlman düstere, symbolische sowie vor allem antikirchliche Visionen der gegenwärtigen und kommenden Zeit und ihrer Gräuel auf den Schlachtfeldern dar – ein moderner »Totentanz«. Hoffnung verschaffen teilweise Blumen, die aus Grabhügeln und Schädeln wachsen, sowie ein kleines Mädchen mit einem Luftballon, das durch einige der apokalyptischen Szenen wandert: Auf einigen der Blätter findet sich die Widmung an seine am 3. Juli 1940 geborene Tochter.

1950 schenkte Fred Uhlman, der 1985 in London starb, der Staatsgalerie 38 Zeichnungen aus diesem Zyklus. 1960 erschien seine Autobiographie »The Making of an Englishman« (deutsch »Erinnerungen eines Stuttgarter Juden«). In das Exemplar, das er dem Stuttgarter Rathaus schenkte, schrieb er handschriftlich die Widmung »Der Stadt Stuttgart. Trotz Allem«.

Unsere Ausstellung im Graphik-Kabinett stellt nun erstmals diese Werke in Stuttgart vor. Anhand eines Begleitprogrammes soll nicht nur exemplarisch das Schicksal so vieler jüdischer Künstlerinnen und Künstler während der NS-Zeit in den Blick genommen werden, sondern auch die Bedeutung jüdischer Kultur in Deutschland aus zeitgenössischer Perspektive diskutiert werden.
