The Museum

Das Stadtmuseum liegt im Herzen der Altstadt am Martin-Luther-Platz. Untergebracht ist es im ehemaligen Altstädter Rathaus, einem sehenswerten Barockgebäude der Stadt Erlangen, erbaut von 1733 bis 1740. Der historische Bau wurde in den Jahren 1989 bis 1993 grundlegend saniert und um ein benachbartes Bürgerhaus aus dem 18. Jahrhundert erweitert.

Die Dauerausstellung bietet einen vollständigen Rundgang durch die Stadtgeschichte in fünf Abteilungen, der bei den ersten Spuren der Besiedlung im Erlanger Raum beginnt und bei der modernen Universitäts- und Siemensstadt im 20. Jahrhundert endet.Ergänzend zeigt das Museum jährlich mehrere Sonderausstellungen im Themenspektrum Stadtgeschichte, Kultur- und Zeitgeschichte, Wissenschaftsgeschichte, Medizingeschichte und Bildende Kunst.

Überregional bedeutsam ist die Sammlung des Stadtmuseums zu den hugenottischen Gewerben der Strumpfwirker, Handschuhmacher, Weißgerber und Teppichwirker. Hinzu kommen archäologische Funde aus der Urnenfelder- und Hallstattzeit, Geräte und Maschinen aus der Zeit der Industrialisierung, Gegenstände des ländlichen Lebens und der Volkskunde, des Kunsthandwerks, der bürgerlichen Wohnkultur sowie Studentika und Spielzeug, aber auch Werke Erlanger und fränkischer Künstler.
