Zwei Jahrzehnte nach dem Aufkommen des impressionistischen Stils in Frankreich begannen auch deutsche Künstler sich mit der neuen Malerei auseinander zu setzen. Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth, Max Slevogt und ihre Mitstreiter in der 1898 gegründeten Berliner Secession traten mit ihren Werken gegen den von Kaiser Wilhelm II. geschätzten Akademismus an und zählen heute zu den Hauptvertretern des deutschen Impressionismus. Doch auch in anderen Regionen des Landes etablierte sich der neue Stil, denn die zunehmende Industrialisierung führte zu einer allgemein veränderten Haltung gegenüber der Natur, förderte eine differenziertere Wahrnehmung der Umwelt und begründete damit auch ein neues Verständnis von den Aufgaben und Mitteln der Kunst. Im Gegensatz zum hellen, durch lichtvolle Farbnuancierungen geprägten französischen Impressionismus setzt die deutsche Spielart dieser Kunstrichtung vielfach andere Akzente – oftmals bedient sie sich einer weniger lichten Farbpalette und betont stattdessen das Atmosphärische. Für die süddeutschen Maler standen vor allem die Landschaft, Tier und Mensch im Zentrum der Auseinandersetzung.Die Konstanzer Ausstellung rückt explizit impressionistische Künstler aus dem süddeutschen Raum in den Fokus. Ausgehend von den in dieser Region dominanten Kunststädten München, Karlsruhe und Stuttgart versammelt sie rund 80 Gemälde und zeigt Werke von 33 prominenten und weniger bekannten Künstlern wie Bernhard Buttersack, Maria Caspar-Filser, Lovis Corinth, Ludwig Dill, Carlos Grethe, Adolf Hölzel, Christian Landenberger, Max Liebermann, Leopold von Kalckreuth, Friedrich Kallmorgen, Hans Molfenter, Hermann Pleuer, Leo Putz, Otto Reiniger, Gustav Schönleber, Max Slevogt, Wilhelm Trübner, Robert Weise, Albert Weisgerber, Fritz von Uhde, Heinrich Zügel und anderen.Die Ausstellung entsteht in Kooperation mit der Gemäldegalerie Dachau.Es erscheint ein Katalog.
