Als Museum inmitten des UNESCO-Welterbes „Höhlen und Eiszeitkunst der Schwäbischen Alb“ vermittelt das urmu, weshalb die Fundstätten Meilensteine des kreativen und kulturellen Schaffens sind. Es werden weltweit einzigartige Fundstücke präsentiert, darunter Elfenbeintierfiguren oder Flöten aus Vogelknochen und Mammutelfenbein, welche mit die ältesten Musikinstrumente der Menschheit sind. Highlight des Museums ist das Original der „Venus vom Hohle Fels“, die mit 40.000 Jahren älteste Frauenstatuette weltweit. In Szenarien eiszeitlicher Tier- und Pflanzenwelt, steinzeitlicher Lagerstätten und Feuerstellen zeichnet das Museum vor allem für Familien ein anschauliches Bild eiszeitlicher Jäger und Sammler. Jeden Sonntag lädt die Steinzeitwerkstatt Kinder zu einem unvergesslichen Erlebnis ein.

Das Museum ist vom Bahnhof in circa 20 Minuten zu Fuß zu erreichen (1 km). Sie folgen vom Bahnhof aus der Karlstraße Richtung Stadtmitte. Das Museum befindet sich am Beginn der Altstadt im zweiten Gebäude rechts. Der Museumseingang ist am südlichen Kirchplatz. Wir sind Partner bei „DB Klasse unterwegs“.

In offenen Vitrinen schweben 16 Nachschnitzungen von altsteinzeitlichen Frauenfiguren und laden den Betrachter ein, sie mit allen Sinnen zu begreifen. Überraschend vielgestaltig sind die weiblichen Frauenfiguren aus der Altsteinzeit, die von Elfenbeinschnitzern gefertigt wurden. Sie zeigen eine Formensprache, die unterschiedlicher nicht sein könnte.

Vergehen und Werden - Der Kreislauf des Lebens

Mit dem Tod beginnt auch der Prozess des Vergehens. Egal ob Mensch, Tier oder Pflanze – in einer festgelegten Reihenfolge beginnen Enzyme, Bakterien, Aasfresser und Kleinstlebewesen mit der Zersetzung. Aber auch jeder Gegenstand, den wir herstellen, ist einem Alterungs- und Auflösungsprozess unterworfen. Abhängig von der Umgebung geschieht das schnell oder langsam: Eine Maus ist im Wald bereits nach wenigen Tagen vergangen, eine Plastikflasche wird dort noch über 400 Jahre zu sehen sein! Bleibt also vom Leben auf der Erde am Ende gar nichts übrig? Mumien, Knochen und Zähne aus der Eiszeit sowie Millionen Jahre alte Fossilien beweisen das Gegenteil. Sie sind aber nicht nur Zeugen der Vergänglichkeit, sondern geben auch Hinweise darauf, wie das erste Leben auf der Erde entstanden sein könnte. Die Ausstellung beleuchtet die einzelnen Stufen des Vergehens. Sie zeigt aber auch anhand von Mumien, Knochen und Fossilien besondere Formen des Nicht-Vergehens und schließt den Kreislauf zum Werden der ersten Organismen.
