Das Weltkulturen Museum verfügt über eine einzigartige Sammlung von 67.000 ethnografischen Objekten aus Ozeanien, Afrika, Südostasien sowie Nord-, Mittel- und Südamerika. Die Sammlung Visuelle Anthropologie umfasst etwa 120.000 historische und zeitgenössische ethnografische Fotografien und Filme und ergänzt den Bestand des Museums. Das Weltkulturen Museum zeigt aufgrund räumlicher Begrenzungen ausschließlich wechselnde Sonderausstellungen.

Auf der ganzen Welt sind und waren Menschen in Bewegung. Mit ihnen wandern auch Lebensstile, Sprachen, Musik, Kunst und Handwerk. Vieles, was für eine Kultur als „authentisch“ gilt, erweist sich auf den zweiten Blick als „Import“. Ausgehend von den eigenen Sammlungen greift das Weltkulturen Museum assoziativ Fragen auf, die zeigen, wie die verschiedenen Kulturen der Welt schon seit jeher im Austausch stehen: Ob historische Siedlungsbewegungen, Arbeitsmigration oder Globalisierung – Menschen und damit auch ihre unterschiedlichen Kulturen stehen in stetigem Austausch. Ist Migration wirklich nur Ursache von Problemen oder vielmehr wichtiger Motor für neue Wege des Zusammenlebens in einer sich ständig verändernden Welt?
