Goethes „Faust“ inspiriert bildende Künstler seit Erscheinen des epochemachenden Werkes. Die bildreiche Sprache Goethes regte zahlreiche Künstler der Romantik zu detailreichen emotionalen Illustrationen an. Berühmte Künstler wie der Franzose Eugène Delacroix (1798–1863) lotete vor allem die psychologischen Spannungsbögen der Tragödie aus. Künstler der klassischen Moderne wie Ernst Barlach (1870–1938) faszinierte die Walpurgisnacht. Dieses Thema fand ebenso wie die Liebesgeschichte zwischen Faust und Gretchen Einzug auch in die Populärkultur. Seit Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts finden sie sich auf kitschigen Postkarten, in Sammelbildern z.B. in der Werbung um eine Fleischkonserve oder auf Notgeldscheinen während der Weltwirtschaftskrise.

Der Vortrag von Dr. Kathrin Schade spannt auf unterhaltsame Weise den kunsthistorischen Bogen zwischen den teils sehr ähnlichen, oft aber auch sehr unterschiedlichen Darstellungen. Ein besonderes Augenmerk wird auf dem Künstler Franz Stassen liegen (1869-1949), der seine Wurzeln im Jugendstil hat. Er lieferte nämlich die Bildvorlagen für die Edelsteingraveure Andreas Roth und Hans Dieter Roth aus Idar-Oberstein, deren fantastische Kameen sich seit Sommer 2020 in der Kabinett-Ausstellung „„Faust in Edelstein – Die größten Kameen der Welt“ im Museum befinden, aufgrund der Corona-Pandemie jedoch nur kurzeitig zu sehen waren. Am Mittwoch, dem 9. Juni um 18.30 Uhr haben Sie letztmalig die Gelegenheit dazu. Der Vortrag wird im Außengelände des Museums stattfinden, im Anschluss kann die Ausstellung personenbegrenzt besucht werden. Schnelltest und Voranmeldung sind nicht mehr nötig, ansonsten gelten die bekannten Corona-Maßnahmen zur Pandemie-Eindämmung.
